2023 Calcannia Clare Valley Sangiovese History: Byrne Vineyards established in 1960 near Devlin’s Pound in South Australia where they planted a vineyard. Here began the Byrne family passion for wine and viticulture. In 2001 Byrne family acquired the Scotts Creek vineyard in which was established by Penfolds. The site was chosen due to its close proximity to the Barossa Valley, the excellent limestone soils and ideal climate for premium wine production. Over the last two decades, Byrne Vineyard has adopted innovative sustainable practices allowing water to be returned to the natural environment and preserving our wetland. Calcannia: Nestled within the picturesque Stanley Flat region of renowned Clare Valley, you'll find Calcannia. Our name draws its inspiration from the road that gracefully winds alongside the vineyard, epitomizing our connection to the land. Located just 6 kilometers north of the township of Clare, and adjacent to the serene Hutt River, the vineyard basks in perfect conditions for crafting wines of exceptional quality Vinification & Winemaking: In 2023, Clare Valley's cooler vintage resulted in wines with vibrant fruit flavors, thanks to a leisurely ripening process. The gently sloping alluvial soils in the vineyard provide the ideal environment for producing a robust and fleshy Sangiovese, showcasing its varietal characters. This is small-batch production at its finest. The wine is fermented dry with seven days of extended skin contact post-fermentation and aged in old French and American oak barrels for three months. It is crafted to be youthful, meeting the criteria for a young Chianti. Grape Variety: 100% Sangiovese
