2023 Elderton Eden Valley Riesling

Production information
2023 Eden Valley Riesling

History :
The Ashmead family of Elderton Wines is extremely passionate about producing exemplary Riesling from Eden Valley. Our commitment to making dry Riesling has now lasted over 25 years and we believe it is the standout white grape from our appellation. In our opinion, the 2019 harvest has all the hallmarks to be a classic and we are proud that this wine was awarded a gold medal at the 2019 Barossa Wine Show.
Whilst Elderton has typically been recognised for our robust red varietals such as Shiraz and Cabernet, this Eden Valley Riesling has, in itself, built an enviable pedigree. The 2007 vintage won the trophy for the ‘Best Current Vintage Riesling’ at the 2007 International Riesling Challenge, with the 2008 vintage following up with a gold medal and trophy for ‘Best Dry White Varietal’ at the 2008 Perth Royal Wine Show. The 2010 vintage was named in the top 5 in the 2010 Winestate Wine of the Year and the 2012 vintage won a gold medal at the 2012 International Riesling Challenge.
Vineyard :
The Eden Valley sub-appellation of the Barossa varies tremendously in climatic conditions and soils from that of the Barossa Valley floor. The climate is cooler and wetter and the soils tend to be skeletal and minerally, which is a major determinant in growing some of Australia’s, and indeed the world’s, best Riesling.

Winemaker's Comment :
The 2023 ripening season was far from normal in the Barossa, instead it was a vintage which rewarded diligence in the vineyard and time spent tasting grapes and trusting your instinct. On deciding it was time to pick our Chardonnay, we headed to Craneford to ground truth the plan and also check on the ripening of our two Riesling parcels thinking it might be a week or so away from harvest. However we walked through each parcel separately to arrive in the middle with this look of excitement at the flavour we were seeing, it was so exciting to taste right at that moment of flavour just arriving - we picked the following day.
The fruit was in such pristine condition that we decided to take the free run which was fermented separately, one parcel giving a very floral terpene lift and the other a citrus note and seamless acid line. We also cut the pressings for ferment in some old oak (only 2% in old French Oak for 1 month). A portion of this has been added back to give a touch of roundness and sophistication to the palate, whilst being careful not to add any phenolic profile to an otherwise pristine example of Eden Valley Riesling. Stay in stainless steel tank for 2 months before bottling.
