2017 Elderton Western Ridge

Production information
History : This is the fifth release of Western Ridge. Giving significance to the place that the wine comes from is integral to the future of the Barossa and, of course, Elderton. The hamlet of Greenock sits on the Western Ridge of the Barossa Valley. We thought it was a nice name to give to our ‘reserve’ Grenache blend – without mentioning the concept of ‘reserve’ which often struggles for meaning in a world full of marketers.
Vineyard:  Our vineyard, located in Greenock in the west of the Barossa Valley was added to the Elderton family in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio. The 60 acre vineyard has plantings back to 1915 and a terroir that has been in demand by many of the Barossa's elite winemakers. 100% Estate grown on the old Helbig vineyard; Grenache planted in 1969 and Carignan in 1915.
-  Grape Variety : 89% Grenache, 11% Carignan
-  Region : Greenock, Barossa
-  Vine Age : 48 - 101 years, Grenache - planted 1969, Carignan - over 100 years old.
-  Soil : Free draining and rich in ironstone. Very sandy in some spots.
Winemaker's Comment : The two varieties were handpicked and placed into the crusher simultaneously. Fermentation in open 1 ton fermenter at relatively cool temperature to ensure the freshness of fruit character was preserved, with intention that the wine be luscious and textural, yet be as far from the blockbuster concept as possible. Aged in old French puncheons for 8 months.
Style : Stunningly pretty and textual wine
Color : light red
Aroma/Palate : Luscious strawberries and cream
Drinkable Period : 2017 – 2027
Alcohol : 14.6%
Expert Comment : Plenty of brambly red berries and blueberries on offer here. This has a bright, lithe and juicy mouthfeel with red licorice to close.
Score/Award : James Halliday 95 points
Food Pairing : Beef and Venison
