2017 Murdoch Hill Artisan Tilbury Chardonnay

Production information
2017  Murdoch Hill ArtisanTilbury Chardonnay

Region : Adelaide Hill, Australia
Vineyard : From a selection of vineyards, predominately from a high altitude vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley the remaining fruit is sourced from the Lobethal districts. These are nature vines with a mix of clones, Bernard C76, C95 & C96 with I10VI, G9V7 and Mendoza clones. The elevation (450-550m) in this cool climate coupled with a range od aspects provides naturally high acidity with depth of fruit to produce a refined elegant style of Chardonnay.
Variety:100% Chardonnay   Harvest:  March – April , 2017
Color: Light Yellow, bright
Climate/soil: Shallow cool climate, harder soil, medium clay subsoil loam, with iron ore, quartz schist soil
Growing environment: The Adelaide Hills 2016/17 growing season was cool and wet with record rainfall and low temperatures resulting in a late, cool vintage. The challenging conditions required heavy crop and leaf reduction to facilitate ripeness and disease control. Harvest was pushed into autumn developing more aromatic flavors and intense natural acidity.
Style/Palate: Expect citrus and floral perfume, and then waves of bright, juicy, grapefruit and other citrus fruits that drive across the palate. There's good texture but it's shot through with crystalline, salty and tangy freshness.
Aroma: Spice, nougat, whiff of sea spray, lemon (citrus) and green apple
Alcohol : 12.5%
Drinkable Period:  2018 – 2026+
Winemaking : The hand-picked grapes were part whole berry & whole bunch pressed, due to the natural balance of the fruit no acidification was required before fermentation in older French Oak. Partial malolactic fermentation was allowed with a touch of lees stirring to add complexity and depth whilst being careful to keep the wine focused to display the unique qualities of the vineyard
Expert Comment: Clones 76 and 95, whole-berry pressed, 20% new French barriques, 40% new 1500L foudre. There are substantial barrel ferment oak inputs here that work well to invest the wine with flavor structure.
Score : James Halliday: 95 points, Wine Front: 94 points
Food Pairings : mushrooms, pork, fish, poultry
