2010 Mitchell McNicol Riesling

Production information
2010 Mitchell McNicol Riesling

Background: The family name of McNicol has been passed down the generations since James Mitchell married Jane McNicol in 1782. It was my father, Peter McNicol Mitchell who came to Clare in 1949 and planted the vineyards that have evolved into the Mitchell Winery. This wine is dedicated to his memory.
Region: Clare Valley
Variety: 100% Riesling

Vineyard Information:  The Single vineyard that supplies the grapes for the acclaimed McNicol Riesling may be the prettiest in all of the Clare Valley. It lies on the side of a steep hill rich in quartzite, with views of Sevenhill and Watervale beyond. Kangaroos hop around the dry grown vines.
Situated 100m above our Watervale vineyard sites, the Single Vineyard has never been irrigated. The soil is grey sandy loam over silt stone, and neither herbicides nor pesticides are used in the growing of these exceptional grapes.
Growing Conditions: A wet winter with rains leading into spring laid the foundation for good 2010 vintage. This was followed by a hot dry summer, which brought vintage on earlier than normal. Warm days and cool nights through February ensured excellent flavor development. The McNicol Riesling vineyard is extremely low yielding, but great quality and 2010 was no exception.
Soil : Rich quartzite
Color: Golden Yellow
Aroma: A spicy ripe and rich lemony nose, leads to a lingering candied lime character on the pallet, long and clean sweet fruit with a pleasing minerality
Palate: A subtle oak character gives the palate an almost savoury extra dimension. Great balance of sugar and acid hints at a long life ahead in the cellar.
Alcohol % : 13.7%     Acidity: 6.2g/L   Residual Sugar: 9.8 g/L
Winemaker Report:  The fruit is handpicked and processed with only the cleanest, free run juice being fermented with natural yeast in one French oak Foudre, where it spent its first year. The wine is then racked and left on fine lees before bottling. We then age the wine for 6-7 years in the bottle before release.
Expert Comment: The stages of the honey and toast of mature Riesling are now on full display, sustaining acidity still running through.
Drinkable Period: Now – 2022
Awards/Expert Reviews: James Halliday 95 point.
