2017 Murdoch Hill Chardonnay

Production information
2017 Murdoch Hill Chardonnay

Region: Adelaide Hill, Australia
Vineyard : Premium vineyards from the Lobethal district, Oakbank and the Piccadilly Valley
Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Color: light yellow
Soil: medium clay subsoil loam, with iron ore, quartz schist soil
Growing environment: The Adelaide Hills 2016/17 growing season was cool and wet with record rainfall and low temperatures resulting in a late, cool vintage. The challenging conditions required heavy crop and leaf reduction to facilitate ripeness and disease control. Harvest was pushed into autumn developing more aromatic flavors and intense natural acidity.
Style/Palate: fine acidity, good complexity and structure
Aroma:  white peach, citrus and grapefruit
Alcohol :  12.5%
Drinkable Period:  2019 - 2025
Winemaking : The fruit was hand picked then kept in cold storage at two degrees for several days. The fruit is whole bunch and whole berry pressed straight to barrel with a mix of barriques and puncheons with 15% new oak. The juice was fermented naturally with largely no malolactic fermentation, a small selection see partial malo to add complexity and soften the often-high acidity.
Expert Comment: A great year for chardonnay in this region with cooler tones, holding power and acid structure in place nicely. Lemons and grapefruit. Some pithy and flinty complexity with subtle peaches and honey building through the palate. An almond pastry-like finish
