Production information
2017 Elderton Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon

History :
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown exclusively on the two or three Elderton Vineyards situated on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa, and the Eastern ranges in Craneford. The 1988 vintage was chosen by Qantas for first class, the 1992 vintage won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 1993 and for the next two years won Gold and Trophy at the Barossa Wine Show. The 1994 vintage gave Elderton its first international Gold medal at the 1996 London International Wine Show. The 1998 once again won Gold and Trophy, in the Barossa Wine Show for the Best Regional Cabernet, and the 1999 won a trophy in Belgium for the best wine imported into the country. A proven consistent performer, we believe that the 2017 will easily continue in this trend

Winemaker's Comment : Above average rainfall during winter, followed by a cooler than average spring, ensured adequate soil moisture for healthy canopy development. The cooler unseasonal conditions prevailed during January and February delaying veraison. Autumn saw the start of an Indian summer which continued well into April, resulting in perfect ripening conditions on the Valley floor for gradual development of flavour, with very fine grained tannins and excellent retention of natural acidity. The 2017 Elderton Estate Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is a fresh and very pure fruit driven wine with an underlying elegance, depictive of a cooler Barossa vintage.
Style : full bodied, rich, classy
Aroma : fresh varietal blackberry and bay leaf with nuances of dark olive
Palate : Concentrate dark fruits fill the palate with hints of chocolate, supported by very fine elegant tannins that lead to a long and seamless finish.
Drinkable Period : 2019 - 2025
Alcohol : 14.5%
Ageing : Predominantly second and third fill French hogsheads (238 liter) and puncheons (318 liter) 22 months.
Expert Comment : The mint-accented, medium to full-bodied 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of Nuri and Greenock fruit. Aged in French oak, it's a quieter, less flamboyant wine than the Shiraz, with cassis, cedar and mint notes lingering on the soft, elegant finish.
Score/Award : Wine Advocate 90 points
Food Pairing : Beef and Venison
