2017 Elderton Eden Valley Chardonnay

Production information

History :
We were so impressed by the fruit off our Craneford Vineyard in previous years, that we saw much promise in producing a premium interpretation of the Chardonnay variety. Whilst being a modern, light, new-world expression, we also believe this will appeal to the lovers of the style made famous by the great vineyards of Chablis in France’s Burgundy region.
Vineyard :
Our Eden Valley vineyard lies just south of the small township of Craneford, at an elevation of 420m. The soil and climate varies quite considerably to that of the Barossa Valley floor. It is generally wetter, cooler in the Eden Valley and the soils tend to be skeletal and minerally. Aspect also varies significantly, with rolling hills and valleys providing much site variation. The Craneford vineyard is tended to by our own viticulturalist, Peter Wild, who ensures utmost care is taken in every step of the vine cycle.

Winemaker’s Comment :
Sitting up on a rocky hill at over 420 metres in the rather exposed Eden Valley ranges, gives the vines a determined character as they are fully exposed to the elements. The cooler temperatures of the Eden Valley allow the Chardonnay vines to ripen fruit slowly, ensuring ample natural acidity and wonderful flavors at harvest.
Expert Comment:. Chardonnay off 25 year old vines. Craneford vineyard. Well flavoured and formed. It moves through the mouth with some seduction. Stonefruit and melon, nuts and cedarwood. Creaminess to the texture though it remains lively. Mouthful of flavor. Musky vanilla note to the aftertaste.
