Winemakers Comments :
2021 was the kindest vintage we have experienced in 9 years of Delinquente – a La Nina cycle bringing good spring rainfall, mild summer temperatures and cool crisp nights Mild seasons that allow a lot of hang time on the vine allows good tannin and character development. Grapes even reached flavour ripeness before sugar ripeness.
The Bassham Family Organic and Biodynamic vineyard, bursting with natural vitality and life, took full advantage of Mother Nature’s gift and produced beautiful quality fruit – sweet, layered and with piercing acidity of it too.
Negroamaro and 10% Nero d'Avola are the two varieties that are perfectly suited to the hot, dry Riverland and the nature of the wines we want to make. The cooler vintage meant that acids remained high, flavours developed intensity and nuance, and yield were excellent too.
Wild fermented in stainless steel, The Negroamaro and Nero d'Avola were picked and fermented separately, and blended prior to bottling.
Style/Palate : This wine is our attempt at essentially trying to emulate a light, cool climate red, with Negroamaro and Nero d'Avola being the perfect varieties for the task. When picked early they carry great acidity, with a fruit profile of crunchy, sour raspberry and green strawberry on the front palate. This fruitiness gives way to a lovely earthy, amaro-esque savouriness, the bitter, herbaceous character working in tandem with elevated, juicy fruit. Forest floor vibes held together by a touch of fuzzy tannin and grippy mouthfeel, whilst still remaining fresh, light and moreish.
Aromas : sour raspberry, green strawberry, a lovely earthy savouriness, forest floor.
