Winemakers Comments : 2021 was the kindest vintage we have experienced in 9 years of Delinquente – a La Nina cycle bringing good spring rainfall, mild summer temperatures and cool crisp nights. The Bassham Family Organic and Biodynamic vineyard, bursting with natural vitality and life, took full advantage of Mother Nature's gift and produced beautiful quality fruit – sweet, layered and with piercing acidity – and plenty of it too.
The Hell Series wines represent our experimentation with winemaking techniques, and allow the fruit to express different, unique and compelling characteristics.
Malvasia is a variety I'm really excited about - big bunches, intense fruit flavor, late ripening and holds onto acidity in hot weather – perfect for The Riverland! The fruit for this wine was hand-picked and then vinified in two different ways - one third was whole bunch pressed and fermented out in a stainless steel tank, with the balance fermented on skins for 14 days, until sugar dry, plunged twice daily. Each parcel was aged separately in used French barriques for about 8 months, before being racked once and blended back together prior to bottling. This wine sees no additions of any kind save for a small amount of SO2 at bottling.
Tasting Note : Working with the fruit in this way has allowed us to create a layered and very unique wine, with length and drive, funk and clarity.
It's super aromatic on the nose, and while initially you get that pop of intense stone fruit sweetness, its balanced out by the savoury, briney, almost saltiness imparted by the time on skins. The acid line holds beautifully to cut through all this provide the length and drinkability required. Allow fish and chips, or spaghetti with swordfish and capers, to find new friend.
