NV Conceito Porto Branco

Introduction : Pre-Phylloxera Vineyard in Douro's "Freixo De Numao" parish.
Vineyard information: Winter is very wet, spring is unstable weather, mild and dry in summer. The grape harvest was earlier, and all the white grapes had been harvested before the rains began in early September. It is impeccable ripe and healthy grapes, with perfect balance and great subtlety. Made from a very old, pre-phlloxera vineyard in a small granite plateau (600m above sea level) in the parish of Frelixo de Numao, 15 km to the west of Foz Coa.
Soil : granite soil

Annual output: 2,000 bottles (ml)
Harvest: 2014
Color: Golden
Style/Palate : white port, a large concentration and fine wine, full-bodied wine
Aroma: Rich ripe tropical fruit and ripe honeydew melon
Alcohol: 20%          Acidity:  6.5 g/l          pH: 3.1          Residual sugar: 126g/l
Drinkable Period : 2015─2045
Winemaking : Grapes were picked relatively early in the season and foot trodden in stone lagares, in a traditional way. Fermentation was interrupted with the inclusion of 77% alcohol wine brandy, as usual for Port. Elevage, 9 months in stainless steeel tanks, early bottling to preserve freshness and liveliness.
Expert Comment : This NV White Port "Conceito by Barbeito" is an unoaked field blend of regional white grapes coming in at 126 grams per liter of residual sugar. It was bottled in 2015 with a long cork. Although by regulation, this can't be vintage-dated without at least seven years aging, it is a 2014. This is a collaboration between Conceito's Rita Marques and Ricardo Freitas of Barbeito (in Madeira). Gorgeous, aromatic and enticing, this beautiful White Port has a lifted feel despite its residual sugar. In many ways, it feels more like a restrained dessert wine than a Port. If the aim was to capture the freshness and liveliness of the wine, let me say that's exactly what I started to write. If this is a bit different (and then some) compared to the older White Ports next to which I tasted it, it is nonetheless completely delectable and impossible to resist. If it lacks some complexity just now, so be it. It has its own virtues, plenty of concentration and fine focus.
